What is the Glendale Relay for Life?

AYSO Region 88 has teamed up with the City of Glendale to participate in the overnight "Relay For Life". This fun-filled event is designed to raise money to help the American Cancer Society save lives, celebrate survivorship, help those who have been touched by cancer, and empower individuals to fight back against this disease.

For those who have not heard of Relay for Life, it is a 24-hour relay walk (not race) to raise money for cancer research. Each team has one person on the team walking during all 24 hours of the event. You get to choose the time you want to walk and the amount of time you wish to stay. Tents are pitched and you can spend the whole night there, food is served, and games and activities go on all day and night.

We would like to invite all of our AYSO families to join our team.

The Region 88 Board has asked Annette Blackwell again this year to organize the Region 88 Relay for Life Team.

The 2007 AYSO team rose over $5,000 last year for Relay for Life and Cancer Research. If someone doesn’t want to donate on line they can send a check payable to Relay for Life. The address to send it to is:

Annette Blackwell
7836 Wentworth St.
Sunland CA 91040.

When and WHere is the relay for Life

The event will take place at the Scholl Canyon on September 27 & 28, 2008.

At dusk there is a ceremony as the Candle of Hope is lit. It is a most touching scene to see hundreds of people walking around a track holding a candle in memory of those lost, in support for those fighting, and in celebration for the survivors, with the hope that one day our children and grandchildren will be able to live in a cancer-free world.

Please join our team or stop by the day of the event and show your support.

Why should I take part?

Region 88 is more than just a soccer league. We are a family and community. Besides the obvious reasons to help raise money to help cure cancer, this will be a lot of fun, and there also will be prizes for each team member who raises a certain amount of money. As part of the Relay phenomenon, together we can accelerate the progress to a cancer-free future.

Food and drinks will be provided throughout the day to participants, and that there will be non-stop entertainment throughout the day and night, including several live band performances, dance groups, karaoke, games for kids, climbing wall, midnight movies on a big screen, and more.

So we are asking Region 88 coaches, or parents, to sign up and join the"AYSO team" to help raise money, and take part in the overnight fun. And, of course, the donations are tax deductible.

Sign up today to become a part of the Relay phenomenon. Together we will fuel the work and the hope that can help make a cancer-free future a reality.

Ask anyone who took part last year, and they had a blast!

How do I join up?

To start a team is easy as clicking on the "Join Our Team" link on the AYSO 88 team of the Glendale Relay for Life web site, and filling out the form.
